PostHeaderIcon New Virus: Beselo Symbian Worm

(Credit: F-Secure)The Beselo.A and Beselo.B worms are in the wild, looking to lure Symbian S60 users into clicking on their incoming malicious files, according to a warning issued Tuesday by F-Secure.

The Beselo worms are tricky, in that they use common media file extensions, rather than a standard SIS extension, in sending their malicious payload.

Like the Commwarrior worms, the Beselo worms rely on MMS and Bluetooth to get around, with some social engineering thrown in to trick users into installing the SIS application installation file. But because this file has a common media file extension, such as beauty.jpg, sex.mp3, or love.rm, users are more likely to click “yes” to an installation prompt when opening the file, notes F-Secure.

F-Secure offers this word of advice: just say “no” to such a request.

“There is no reason for any image file to ask installation questions on the Symbian platform, so any image or sound file that does something else than play immediately is without question something else than it claims to be,” warns F-Secure.

That’s the latest twist on smart-phone worms, which debuted in 2004 with the arrival of the Cabir worm. The Beselo worms, meanwhile, were initially clumped in with the pervasive Commwarrior worms, until a discovery was made about their use of common media file extensions.

Another better way.. Download and install a good antivirus. Scan and clean viruses and chill.

  • M.L.G. says:

No, Sirs, downloading a good anti-virus or two – or even more – does not always guarantee that the Drive C of the mobile is rid of the infection. Consider that not all of the viruses and malwares in the world are detected by anti-viruses. Security softwares have limited virus database. Furthermore, more and more viruses are created every passing day.

I agree with SANAULLAH with his disinfection procedures; however, a bette step-by-step for disinfection should be this way:

    1. Remove memory card from the device.
    2. Format the device. If the device cannot be formatted manually,
format through a PC. If, still, you are unable to format it,
upgrade to a higher firmware of the device using flashing
    materials. Downgrading sometimes also works.
    3. Format the memory through a PC.
    4. Insert the memory card on the device then reformat it.

    WAAAAAAAAAAALAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!
    You’re done!

    @ Bob
try to use the *, 3 and call button, and use is when you start up the phone.
    1. start up the phone by pushing the on/off button
    2. directly push all 3 buttons at the same time and keep them for 5 sec
    3. reset done
    4. as you will see everything is gone
if this won’t work please try the next step,
5.set fire to you’re phone, or try smashing it with a hammer and make some nice pictures of it and broadcast thme around the wourld so people like me can laugh once in a while.
You should also delete your mem card but not when it’s in the phone
and also don’t delete you’re phone while your mem card is still in there

  • BobdeBauer says:

    @ Bob
the last thing i mentioned, about you’re mem card, should probable the first thing to do
