PostHeaderIcon Tips to Know when u have a Symbian

Here this post is submitted in our forum by one of our member Waleed0785:

Based on personal experience and getting
tips
from various forums on the Web, I present this list that may be useful for users of SymbianS60 phones N series (N95, N80, N73, N91, N93, N93i, .. etc. ).

>>>My phone is turned on or not on the home screen logo “Nokia” what I can do?

A common problem sometimes just because a problem occurred after installing an
application
or by other circumstances, what is certain is that if there is a way to fix it, starting from a Hard Reset

Pressing the keys at the same time:
- 3 – Call key – (Green) – Power key
To achieve this the phone to make a full reset, this means they will lose all programs installed on
the phone
, Contacts, Calendar, etc…. only the files on the memory card were intact, some apps that are installed on the memory
card
is installed automatically after you start the phone .. but it is a significant loss given that our phone was used again

>>>I installed an
application
and not working properly, Why?

[ad#goog]
The reasons for which an
application
will not work properly you may be several.

The first thing to check is whether the application is compatible with your phone, remember that, for example applications
Symbian
S60v3, are not compatible with previous versions. (The same version of software installed on the Nokia N90 can not install it on the N80, for example).

>>>
My phone
displays SYSTEM ERROR, what should I do?

Turn your phone into a “fail safe”.

This is done by pressing the “pen” while leaving the device and turn tight until you ask for the PIN.

Remove the phone’s memory
card
, Turn it off and turn it on again. If your phone works fine, the problem is in the memory
card
. Formattingthe
card
and the problem is very likely that this resolved.

Removing the
card
even if the problem persists, you have toreformat

the phone
. There are several types and formatting codes areperformed by entering the mobile phone keypad:

Codes:

– * # 7780 # -> Restore the original settings of
the phone

- * # 7370 # -> Soft format, but restores the software keeps your settings, contacts, messages, etc..

>>> My memory
card
is locked, how did you fix this?

MMC seeks to store the file on the C: drive using any file manager (SeleQ, Fileman, FexPlorer, ProfiExplorer.) Etc.

Rename the file and put the extension. “Txt”, and the password will be open inside.

Another option is to format the memory
card
with a
card
reader on your PC. (This will remove all data from the memory
card
).

>>> Memory “in use”
My phone
is full What happens?

Probably you have some
application
is open in the background. ”

To test simply to stop pressing the “Menu” and you open the listof running applications. Select the
application
you want to quit andpress “C”.

>>> How to turn your phone into a “fail”?

To start
the phone
in “fail safe” you have to press the “pen”while turning
the phone
and let it down until you ask for the PIN code.

>>>Why can not I send files via bluetooth?

The new firmware updates can not send files to be “protected” (SIS and JAR) via bluetooth. To do this you have 2 options:

1 – Rename the file you want to send the extension and change them to gif, jpg, etc..

2 – Try using “ProfiExplorer” or “x-plorer. It is a file managertype FexPlorer “jumping protection and allows you to send such filesvia bluetooth.

>>> Why can not I uninstall an
application
?

Normally, restarting
the phone
to solve the problem.

If even so, could not uninstall the
application
, probably because the program is in use.

Instálate in a mobile
application
that lets you finish running processes (AppMan, for example).

Terminate processes that are running the
application
you want and you can uninstall uninstall smoothly.

installed an
application
(TomTom, for example) and the galleryof images I have been filling this
application
. Can I delete them? Arethey necessary?

Normally, all images are copied to install an
application
are required and can not be erased.

The solution so you do not go in the gallery is very simple.Simply dial the images do not want to be out in the gallery as”hidden.”

You can do it from Windows and a
card
reader:

Right mouse button over the image and selecting “Properties” and check “Hidden” in “Attributes”
You can also do so from the same phone with a file manager (FexPlorer, ProfiExplorer.), Putting the attribute “Hidden” file.

>>>The PC Suite does not connect me with the mobile what?

The first option is to uninstall the PC Suite and reinstall it.
If you still not connect, try to put this command in Windows:

- Regsvr32.exe% Windir% \ System32 \ Ole32.dll
(Go to “Start / Run” and the window that you type this command leaves)
Often, the PC Suite, when installed, this book does not register correctly and connect it to your PC with your phone.

Hope it will help some of you..

PostHeaderIcon How to apply .app file?

Some of reader has asked this question many time that how to apply an .app file to an installed application. Here is guide to apply .app file correctly.
Short Info..

[ad#chi60]

.APP file – it is not an installer that you will install to ur mobile.
If we can see some execution file in our windows in “.EXE”. We use it to run programs,
for example, Explore ur C:/Programfiles/ and open any folder you like, you can see there that there’s an .exe file.
[ad#co-1]
if you click it, you will be able to open that Application.
Like in our Symbian Phones, .exe file is replaced as .app file.
And .app file is available to register(cr4ck) some applications and games.

i hope you get what i mean..

So here’s how you do with the file..

1. First you will need a File Explorer such as FEplorer, Profiexplorer, Fileman, etc.
install any of this ‘coz you will need this through the process.

All apps mentioned are available to download easily.
FExplorer 1.12 is suggested.
[ad#goog]
2. If ever you download an app that comes with .APP file, first install the .SIS file onto ur mobile.
after installing, if you open the app you can get some registration reminder, so here it is..

3. Send the .APP file to ur Mobile(lots of ways, tru BT, IR or Card Reader)

3.1 Tru IR or BT – Send it once, but do not open it as it will come as text message, pop up
will come saying “Unknown File Format”. Just go to ur File Explorer. At the root, you can
see [Inbox], Open it and you can see there the .APP file that you’ve sent click on the Option>Edit>Copy then go to X:/System/Apps/ the folder of the app[for example CallRecorder].
at the folder click again Option>Edit>Paste, and it will ask you if you want to override existing, just click yes.
After pasting, go to the application you just modified and see if theres any pop up for registering that app. If none, go to ur Messages Inbox and delete the messages that comes from ur IR or BT.

That’s it! so be done..

3.2 Tru Card Reader – First install the app on ur mobile and choose Memory to store that app. This option is applicable only for those who likes to install apps or games to their Memory Card.
Just Simply insert ur Memory Card into Card Reader. Open the drive that contains the file and to the DIR of the app you will copy and paste the .APP file.
For Example CallRecorder. Copy the .app file from ur computer and paste it at Y:/System/Apps/CallRecorder. and it will ask you if you want to override existing, just click yes.

That’s it again..

Note: X – means where you install the Apps or Games only in C: or E:
Y – means the drive you open ur Memory Card

Hope you find it usefull and easy to understand.

PostHeaderIcon Interpreting Signing Error Messages in S60 3rd Edition

Message: Certificate error. Contact the application supplier.
[ad#chi60]

Hint: You may have tried installing unsigned application. Note that signing is mandatory S60 3rd Edition. You can use self-signed certificate or developer certificate from Symbian Signed to sign your application.

Message: Unable to install. Constrained by the certificate.

Hint: This message pops up when you attempt to install developer certificate in the unsupported device. The developer certificate from Symbian Signed can only be used in a limited number of devices. Remember that you have to send your IMEIs to Symbian Signed when requesting certificate. You cannot use the certificate in other devices that is not in your IMEIs list.

Message: Required application access not granted.

Hint: Check that your certificate can be used to sign all capabilities needed by your application. For example, if you use self-signed certificate, you can only sign basic set capabilities, i.e. NetworkServices, ReadUserData, WriteUserData, LocalServices and UserEnvironment. If your application requires one of the extended capabilities, for example SwEvent, you cannot sign it with self-signed certificate. In this case, apply for developer certificates from Symbian Signed.

Message: Unable to install a protected application from an untrusted supplier.

Hint: If you use self-signed certificate, make sure that your application uses unprotected UID, i.e. 0xA0000000 – 0xAFFFFFFF. If you use protected UID (0×20000000 – 0x2FFFFFFF) or legacy UID (0×10000000 – 0x1FFFFFFF), you will get this message.

Message: Unable to install.

Hint: This message may come up when your installation file (.sis/.sisx) copies files to other application’s private folder, i.e. \private\uid. Note that Symbian 9 introduces data caging concept, it means you don’t have access to other application’s private folder.

Message: Expired Certificate

Hint: Do this…
Set the phone date back by 7-8months..

Message: Update error

Hint: Uninstall any previous version of the application, then switch on/off the phone and install again

PostHeaderIcon Small Font Solution For Nokia E65

Those who are still having problem changing fonts on your E65 phone, here is the solution….

[ad#chi60]

Tested and works nicely on E65 (using Verdana font) with this firmware:
1.0633.18.01
11.01.07
RM-208

Note: To get your phone firmware, press *#0000# on Idle screen

What you need:
-PC
-PC card reader
-Y-Browser or F-Explorer programs in your phone

Steps:
1. Using Y-Browser or F-Explorer, go to directory “z:” (of your phone memory). If you do not have these program, go search the forum
2. Under the “z:” folder, go to folder named “resource”
3. go to folder named ”fonts”
4. you will see list of fonts file used by your phone. Note down name of each file. Most likely you will see;

S60SC.ccc
S60TCHK.ccc
S60ZDIGI.ttf
SWABIU.ttf
SWABRU.ttf
SWARIU.ttf
SWARRU.ttf

5. Take out your phone memory card and put it into your PC card reader
6. In your PC, go to folder C:/Windows/Fonts or download fonts from websites
7. Copy the “verdana.ttf” font file (or any other font file you prefer)
8. Duplicate font file you copied above (in this case you have to duplicate 7 times) and rename them exactly as mentioned under step 4
9. Access your memory card and find folder named “resource”. If there is no such folder, create one.
10. Under the “resource” folder, create a folder named “fonts”
11. Copy all files you created under step 8, and paste under the “fonts” folder you just created under step 10
12. Put back your memory card into the phone and turn on the phone

Your phone should now have new fonts

If you want to revert back to original font, just delete all files you created under step 11 and remove the “fonts” folder (in your memory card “resource” folder)

Good luck.

PostHeaderIcon Few facts about Signing applications for S60 3rd Edition

S60 3rd Edition requires all Symbian applications to be signed, that’s one of the bigger changes that came with Symbian 9.1 operating system. This has led to some confusion among developers, who think they need to apply for a certificate (which costs money and takes time) even to be able to show a ‘Hello world’ on the screen. This was very confusing for me too for some time, but now I got it. Hope this helps somebody out there.

[ad#chi60]

Self signing with own certificate
To sign an application you can create your own private certificate, with the tools and instructions that come with S60 SDK. For step-by-step instructions, look for “How to Sign .sis files” on SDK docs folder (no online link, sorry). The catch is that even though your application will be installable, it’s still treated as ‘untrusted’ and has some limitations applied by the platform security. One limitation is that the application cannot get any capabilities other than those which are user grantable (ie. ReadUserData, WriteUserData, NetworkServices, LocalServices and UserEnvironment). I don’t really know how limiting those 5 capabilities are for real-life applications. What I do know is that some s60 apps are signed with a self-created certificate, and that application does stuff like read files and access network.

There are also some usability issues with self signed applications. The user will get an intrusive security warning (pictured below).

If you chooses to take the risk and Continue, he will be asked to confirm the capabilities that the application wants to use (pictured below). To me this dialog is not really understandable. Its purpose is to ask from the user, but I guess on the sake of usability there is no question but just Continue/Cancel choice. I don’t think an average user will understand what he just did after pressing Continue.

This was the default case for self signed applications. On some S60 devices (at least Eseries) there might be one additional step to make. There is a setting on Application manager that controls whether untrusted applications can be installed at all. If this setting is ‘Signed only’, there will be an error dialog shown and application won’t install (see below). The user needs to change the setting to ‘All’ to allow self signed apps to install.

That’s it about self-created certificate and signing. To make the picture full, I’ll mention the other options that lead to a ‘trusted’ application that can have more capabilities, and doesn’t ask anything from the user.

Freeware certification
Special route for freeware applications, that doesn’t cost anything but can take some time. More at Symbian Signed.

Symbian Signed certification
The “default” way of signing a commercial application. See more here. Cost is $350 /year for ACS Publisher ID and testing cost starting from 185€/round.

Self certification
The heaviest option for bigger developers, cost $10000 /year.
